Solar cycles were discovered in 1843 by Samuel Heinrich
Schwabe who, after 17 years of observations, noted a periodic change in the
average number of sunspots in a progression that follows an 11 years cycle.
Scientists were perplexed by the fact that each cycle was a little different.
None of the models could explain these fluctuations.
