Tricyclic
antidepressants and MAOIs have existed for decades and were the only
pharmacological options. Now their use has decreased mainly due to the creation
of drugs with fewer side effects, the so-called second-generation
antidepressants. These antidepressants are more specific and therefore their
side effects are slightly reduced, although their effect is similar to those of
tricyclic antidepressants and MAOIs.
